ATHEA ROBERTS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

"ATHEA ROBERTS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - The family of Athea Roberts has established a scholarship in her memory. Athea was a longtime, well-known resident of Lexington. Education was a priority to her, and consequently she was a very high achiever. She attended Lexington Public Schools, graduating in 1907 at age 15. Athea became the first woman elected to the Lexington Board of Education, and was instrumental in promoting the bond issue that led to building the Pershing and Bryan Elementary schools. The focal point in Athea’s life was music. She began formal music education at age 6, and began teaching piano at age 16. In 70 years of piano lessons, Athea taught hundreds of students. Being the organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington from age 11 to 91 was a great enjoyment in her life. She played for countless weddings, funerals and Sunday church services. Athea was blessed to live in her own home until she was 104, passing away a short time later in 1997 at the age of 106. Through her music and countless years of community service, she touched thousands of lives and truly loved the Lexington community. This scholarship fund, created in her honor, will award one $1,000 scholarship to a graduate or graduating senior of Lexington High School. The applicant must be pursuing a post-secondary education at a university, college, trade school or community college. QUALIFICATIONS Consideration for this scholarship will be given to a student who is a LHS graduating senior with a high school GPA of 3.5 or above, or LHS graduate (current college student) with a collegiate GPA of 3.0 or above. Applicant must show qualities of good character and leadership skills and be involved in school and community activities. Specifically- share how participation in any types of music activities will be a part of their career, life or leisure time.
