Carlos H. Gil Memorial Athletic Scholarship

"The Carlos H. Gil Memorial Athletic Scholarship is open to all Waubonsee student athletes who demonstrate financial need. Carlos H. Gil was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to the United States with his family at a young age. Although he was a natural-born athlete, Carlos had never played soccer prior to entering Aurora West High School. By 1982, the forward had helped write the Blackhawks’ record book. Carlos netted the first goal in school history, had a 20-goal season, and went on to be named the MLS -Chicago Sting Prep Player of the Week four times – a school record. After high school, Carlos brought his talents to Waubonsee Community College, earning All-Skyway Conference and All-Region IV First Team honors as just a freshman. Carlos recorded 23 goals and 21 assists to help Waubonsee break into the NJCAA national rankings and compile a 22-4-1 overall record. As a sophomore in 1983, Carlos took his game to another level by scoring 43 goals to go along with 15 assists. He was named an NJCAA All-American and earned Skyway Conference and Region IV Player of the Year honors. That season, he scored six goals in a single match at the Mankato (MN) Tournament, tying the NJCAA single-game record at the time. Carlos also served as the Waubonsee soccer team captain that year, with the team finishing their season ranked fourth nationally in the final regular-season poll—one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. While continuing his studies the next season, Carlos took over as head coach, guiding Waubonsee to the Region IV finals for the third consecutive year. Carlos then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on a full soccer scholarship, where he finished his collegiate soccer career. The scholarship may cover all or part of tuition and required course fees and may also provide support for required books for credit courses."
