Program description
"The Carolyn B. Knapp and Charles H. Bernhard scholarship provides a 4 year renewable award (amount subject to variation) to a high achieving incoming freshman with financial need pursuing a degree in the College of Letters & Science. The majority of scholarship opportunities for incoming freshman in the College of Letters & Science will be assessed per the admission application and financial aid data from the FAFSA . There is not a separate scholarship application to complete for most scholarships. Most awards prioritize excellent students with financial need. You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for institutional and federal financial aid by the December 1 priority date. Admission application essays may be reviewed as a part of the scholarship selection process. Scholarship opportunities are very limited for non-Wisconsin residents and international students are not eligible for incoming freshman scholarships. The UW-Madison admissions decision process is independent of the College of Letters & Science scholarship awarding process. The Carolyn B. Knapp and Charles H. Bernhard Fund was established to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students within the College of Letters & Science. Carolyn received her B.S. in Economics from the UW-Madison in 1936. Students awarded an incoming freshman scholarship will receive an award offer email to their wisc.edu email account. Student financial aid packages may be impacted by scholarship awards. It is recommended that students contact the financial aid office to learn about impact on current aid packages. Where this information comes from
This page is published from Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (UW-Madison)'s own public scholarship portal (wisc.academicworks.com), read and verified 2026-09-03. This is a different source from most of this site's listings, which come from IRS Form 990-PF filings — see how we source scholarships. Portals change between cycles, so always confirm current details on the source listing before applying.
Most listings on this site are compiled from the foundation’s own IRS Form 990-PF filing — the public record where foundations that accept applications must state who to contact, how to apply, any deadlines, and any restrictions. Listings under /award/ are a second, separate source: read directly from the foundation’s own public scholarship portal, with a link to that source on every page. Filings are annual and portals change between cycles, so details can change: always confirm the current deadline and requirements with the foundation before applying. This site is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any foundation listed. Scholarship information here is free; we charge only for optional application coaching, and we never write your application for you.
