Program description

"The Charles H. Holbrow Memorial Scholarship provides a one-time award to an undergraduate student from the College of Letters & Science demonstrating an interest in the interdisciplinary relationship between the arts and sciences. Completed applications are evaluated using donor criteria and College of Letters & Science criteria . Students who are not current recipients of Letters & Science multi-year scholarships are given priority. Students must be in and maintain good standing and full-time enrollment in the College of Letters & Science. This fund was established by the Ford Scholars alumni organization and the Holbrow Family, in memory of Professor Charles “Charlie” H. Holbrow. After entering UW-Madison as a Ford Scholar, in 1955 Holbrow earned his BA in history in 1955 from UW-Madison, and later a MA in history from Columbia’s Russian Institute. Subsequently in 1963, he completed his PhD in nuclear physics from UW-Madison, finding inspiration from the dawning of the space age. Professor Holbrow had an appetite for learning and making connections with others, teaching others in new and creative ways throughout his life and career. Apply for the College of Letters & Science Scholarships Application for Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors by using your campus NetID and password and clicking on the “Sign In” button on the top-right corner of this screen. Student financial aid packages can be impacted by scholarship awards. It is recommended that students contact UW’s Office of Student Financial Aid to learn about impact on current aid packages . Where this information comes from

This page is published from Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (UW-Madison)'s own public scholarship portal (wisc.academicworks.com), read and verified 2026-09-03. This is a different source from most of this site's listings, which come from IRS Form 990-PF filings — see how we source scholarships. Portals change between cycles, so always confirm current details on the source listing before applying.

Most listings on this site are compiled from the foundation’s own IRS Form 990-PF filing — the public record where foundations that accept applications must state who to contact, how to apply, any deadlines, and any restrictions. Listings under /award/ are a second, separate source: read directly from the foundation’s own public scholarship portal, with a link to that source on every page. Filings are annual and portals change between cycles, so details can change: always confirm the current deadline and requirements with the foundation before applying. This site is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any foundation listed. Scholarship information here is free; we charge only for optional application coaching, and we never write your application for you.
