Program description

"Elizabeth Dietz (1964-2005) was a poet and professor of Renaissance Literature at Rice University. A graduate of both the Writers Workshop and the University of Iowa’s doctoral program in English, Elizabeth specialized in the lyric poetry of sixteenth and seventeenth-century England and was equally interested in poetic theory and practice. She was also a gifted teacher of poetry. The Dietz Essay Prize is awarded annually, on alternating years, for the best essay on poetry written by an undergraduate and a graduate student. In honor of Elizabeth’s broad and eclectic interests, essays on all kinds of poetry — epic, lyric, narrative, dramatic, and experimental — as well as on poetics are welcome. This prize is offered to an undergraduate major in the spring of even-numbered years."

Where this information comes from

This page is published from University of Iowa's own public scholarship portal (uiowa.academicworks.com), read and verified 2026-09-03. This is a different source from most of this site's listings, which come from IRS Form 990-PF filings — see how we source scholarships. Portals change between cycles, so always confirm current details on the source listing before applying.

Most listings on this site are compiled from the foundation’s own IRS Form 990-PF filing — the public record where foundations that accept applications must state who to contact, how to apply, any deadlines, and any restrictions. Listings under /award/ are a second, separate source: read directly from the foundation’s own public scholarship portal, with a link to that source on every page. Filings are annual and portals change between cycles, so details can change: always confirm the current deadline and requirements with the foundation before applying. This site is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any foundation listed. Scholarship information here is free; we charge only for optional application coaching, and we never write your application for you.
