Environmental Sustainability Scholars Program

"The Nelson Institute Environmental Sustainability Scholars Program ( ESSP ) is designed for incoming first-year students who want to link their passion for the environment and sustainability with a commitment to building more equitable communities. In this program, students take a 1-credit seminar that introduces them to sustainability where they will learn more about taking care of the environment and people. They will also explore the UW-Madison campus and work with the community to help meet the university’s sustainability goals. This seminar creates a supportive group where students feel they belong and learn how to make their own communities more sustainable and fair. This local learning will also help them understand global issues. ESSP is now accepting applications for Fall 2026! Applications will be accepted until all available spots in the program are filled. ESSP is both an academic and scholarship program. Program applicants are automatically considered for scholarships. ESSP is open to students from all different fields and interests. We especially encourage students from backgrounds that are often underrepresented in environmental studies and sustainability, such as first-generation college students and those from rural or urban communities, to apply and help shape the future of ESSP . Who can apply? Incoming freshmen who plan to complete an undergraduate program (certificate or major) in environmental studies or sustainability. Who can receive a scholarship? Students with unmet financial need who are interested in dimensions of sustainability, including the environment and social aspects. Students should also have an interest in building more equitable communities on campus and in their own communities. How much can I receive? Up to $2,000, based on unmet financial need.
