Program description

"GPA : 2.50, Units Completed: 6.00, Minimum Units Enrolled: 9 Margaret Vahanian Dervishian and George Dervishian were orphaned at very young ages as a result of the Armenian Genocide. Margaret was taken into Birds Nest and was raised by Danish missionary Maria “Mama” Jacobsen. George’s and Margaret’s lives exemplify courage, hard work and a strong moral compass that led them to success in America. It is that success that makes this scholarship possible. Maria Jacobsen is an example of courage, compassion and dedication in caring for the homeless and helpless victims of the tragedy of war. Students must write an essay of no more than 750 words on Maria Jacobsen, a Danish missionary, who established the Birds Nest Orphanage in Beirut, Lebanon."

Where this information comes from

This page is published from Los Rios Community College District Foundation's own public scholarship portal (losrios.academicworks.com), read and verified 2026-09-03. This is a different source from most of this site's listings, which come from IRS Form 990-PF filings — see how we source scholarships. Portals change between cycles, so always confirm current details on the source listing before applying.

Most listings on this site are compiled from the foundation’s own IRS Form 990-PF filing — the public record where foundations that accept applications must state who to contact, how to apply, any deadlines, and any restrictions. Listings under /award/ are a second, separate source: read directly from the foundation’s own public scholarship portal, with a link to that source on every page. Filings are annual and portals change between cycles, so details can change: always confirm the current deadline and requirements with the foundation before applying. This site is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any foundation listed. Scholarship information here is free; we charge only for optional application coaching, and we never write your application for you.
