Who is eligible

“Scholarships awarded to students studying for a bachelor's degree in geoscience. Students must be u.s. Citizens attending one of seven universities that participate in the foundation's scholarship program. These include rice university, the university of houston, texas a&m university, the university of texas, sam houston state university, stephen f. Austin state university, and lamar university. Each fall, the head of the geosciences department at each university is contacted. The university submits two nominees and notifies the students of their nomination. Each student is then required to file an application to the foundation by a deadline. All applications are reviewed in late november and winners are notified in december. The scholarships are presented to the students in january or february at one of the regular hgs dinner meetings. Typically, if the applicants are qualified, the foundation attempts to award a scholarship to each university participating in the program.”

Restrictions are quoted from the filing’s own words. A foundation’s mailing address doesn’t always decide who’s eligible — the restriction text above does.

Where this information comes from

Every fact on this page is published from the foundation’s own IRS Form 990-PF for the tax period ending 2025-06-30 (EIN 760138744). Part XV of that form is where a private foundation that accepts unsolicited applications must tell the IRS — and the public — who to send applications to, what to include, any deadlines, and any restrictions on awards. Most of these programs are never listed on scholarship search sites; the filing is often the only public record they exist.

Every listing on this site is compiled from the foundation’s own IRS Form 990-PF filing — the public record where foundations that accept applications must state who to contact, how to apply, any deadlines, and any restrictions. Filings are annual, so details can change between filings: always confirm the current deadline and requirements with the foundation before applying. This site is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any foundation listed. Scholarship information here is free; we charge only for optional application coaching, and we never write your application for you.
